Meet Mennie Scapens
My work (and this book) is all about connection. It’s about highlighting and healing the growing sense of disconnection in our world - disconnection with our deeper self, with each other and our shared humanity, disconnection from nature and this wondrous planet we live on.
As a Courage & Renewal® facilitator, I design and facilitate Circle of Trust® programs for personal and professional renewal, and for leadership and organizational development. The Circle of Trust approach is based on the work of author/ activist Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal. If you haven’t yet checked out Parker’s work, then I encourage you to do so. He’s a wise and insightful writer and teacher. You can find some of his books listed in the bibliography.
My work is about helping people (and their organizations) to develop the courage to show up in their lives and work authentically, to take a stand on the things they believe in, and to lead meaningful lives of integrity. My approach is founded on the belief that the most important thing we each bring to our work and the world is ourselves. You can find more information about my upcoming events here.
I have 20 years’ experience in educational leadership, having co-founded and led Matahui School, a small independent primary school in the Bay of Plenty, NZ. The school became renowned for its ‘multiple intelligences’ philosophy (Gardner, 1983) and for developing students’ creativity, their problem-solving skills, and their emotional intelligence. We regularly hosted visiting teachers and provided workshops for teachers and parents in the local education community and university. My Master of Education thesis, detailing an action research project with a group of secondary school teachers who were trying to implement MI-based student-centred teaching practices, was published in 2008 as Conflicting Beliefs: The theory of multiple intelligences in the junior secondary school.
I believe the life and leadership lessons I learned during my time in education are just as relevant in other organizational settings. Over the past 40 years my husband and I have owned and managed successful business ventures in kiwifruit, tourism and currently, in civil infrastructure.
